Laser Device Takes ‘Ouch’ Out Of Hair Removal

Laser hair removal can be the answer to having smooth, hairless skin at the beach this summer and it has recently become a painless procedure.

A new device has taken the pain out and NBC tested it on a few women.

If you need unwanted hair to vanish for a long time, it can hurt, whether you laser it, wax it or use electrolysis. But now a simple new device is taking the hurt out of hair removal.

Laser expert Eric Bernstein tested it on many people, including several while NBC was there.

The test volunteers included personal trainer Gretchen Corialos, who wants her whole body to be smooth, and Philadelphia’s Erin Elmore, an investment banker who was on Season Three of the Apprentice.

Also joining the test was Kate Beaver, a dancer for the Philadelphia 76ers.

They all bared their armpits and had regular laser hair removal under one arm and the new improved type under the other.

Traditionally, one of the drawbacks of laser hair removal was that it hurt. And the reason it hurt was because the hair absorbs the light and produces heat. The more hair and the thicker the hair, the more it hurts.

The regular laser hair removal was used on Elmore, who let everyone know how it felt.

“I feel it. Oowwwhhh,” Elmore said.

When asked if it was more painful than getting fired on the Apprentice she said, “I think the firing may have been more painful on my heart. This is more painful on my pits.”

Then they tired simliar lasering but with a new invention, a PSF device that actually sucks up the skin.

“There’s definitely less pain,” Beaver said. “I would do this one again, the one with less pain. Definitely.”

Bernstein said what the device does is it suctions the skin so we feel a pressure sensation and we can’t feel pain.

“Our skin is only allowed to feel one sensation at a time. So we can feel pressure or we can feel pain. Given the choice, we’d all choose pressure,” he said.

The PSF device can also be used in more sensitive areas.

Once you have laser hair treatments three times, you’ll only need a touchup once or twice a year to keep the hair away.

The cost for two armpits is about $150 to $250.
